The first working laser was introduced in 1960. Operated by Theodore Maiman, it consisted of a high-power flash lamp that shone on a ruby rod coated with silver. Laser hair removal likely came as a byproduct of an experiment. In the mid-1970s, the development of the alexandrite laser made light-based hair removal a commercial possibility since it was a lot safer than older ones on the market. Yet it tended to under-heat follicles, so it wasn’t terribly effective for hair reduction.

It was made possible in the 1980s to remove birthmarks with lasers. And it was noticed that the hair in a treated birthmark’s region didn’t grow back. These first medical lasers targeted melanin, but the problem was in their strength – they burned hair and skin alike if the skin happened to be tanned or dark. But this changed with the development of pulsed diode array lasers. These made laser hair removal a viable option for people with darker skin.
