How Should I Shave Before Laser Hair Removal?

Laser Hair Removal Prep: What To Know

Getting ready for your first laser hair removal session? You might be wondering: Do I need to shave? How should I do it? When? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Prepping your skin the right way makes a big difference, and shaving is a key part of that prep.

Here’s everything you need to know to show up smooth, safe, and ready to zap those hairs for good.

Why You Need to Shave Before Laser Hair Removal

It might seem strange, but yes—shaving is actually required before your laser hair removal appointment. Here’s why:

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in your hair follicle, which sits just under the skin. If there’s hair on the surface, the laser can hit that instead, which means the energy gets absorbed in the wrong place. That can make the treatment less effective and more uncomfortable.

Shaving gets rid of the surface hair but leaves the root intact, so the laser can do its job. Think of it like clearing a path so the laser can get right where it needs to go.

How to Shave the Right Way

Shaving for laser isn’t quite the same as shaving for the beach. Here’s how to do it right:

Shave the Day Before Your Appointment

Not the day of. Not two days before. The sweet spot is 24 hours ahead. This gives your skin a little time to calm down, just in case it gets a bit red or irritated after shaving.

Use a Clean, Sharp Razor

Dull blades can cause nicks, bumps, and irritation. Use a brand-new razor to keep things hygienic and gentle on your skin.

Shave With the Grain

Always shave in the same direction your hair grows. It’s easier on your skin and helps prevent razor burn and ingrown hairs.

What Not to Do

Shaving is great. Waxing, plucking, and depilatory creams? Not so much.

Anything that removes the hair from the root—like waxing or tweezing—makes laser hair removal less effective. The laser needs the root to find the follicle. If it’s gone, there’s nothing to treat. So skip these for at least 4 to 6 weeks before your session.

Also avoid hair removal creams. They can irritate your skin and make it more sensitive to the laser.

More Pre-Care Tips for Smooth Sailing

Shaving is just one part of prepping for your appointment. Here are a few more things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid the sun: Stay out of direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks before your session. Sunburns and tans can increase your risk of side effects.

  • Skip the spray tan: Even the best fake tans can confuse the laser. It’s best to wait until your treatment series is finished before tanning.

  • Stop using strong skincare products: No retinoids, exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs, or acne treatments on the treatment area for 3 days before your session. These can make your skin more sensitive.

  • Come with clean, product-free skin: On the day of your appointment, don’t wear lotion, deodorant, oils, or makeup on the area being treated.

Ready to Glow?

Laser hair removal is an amazing way to ditch the razor for good—but it starts with one last shave. Follow these easy steps, and you’ll be ready for smooth, hair-free skin in no time.
